A city man is alleging police officers “violently assaulted” in the parking lot of the D’Classico Restaurant in downtown Paterson.

Jordan Sams claims on March 23, 2019, he was in the parking lot to patronize the restaurant, when a group of police officers “accosted” him, forcefully detaining him “without probable cause,” states the lawsuit filed last Monday.

“During the physical detention of the Plaintiff, the Defendant police officers violently assaulted him and threw him to the ground, kicking him with booted feet, punching him with fists, and striking him with batons multiple times about his face and body,” reads the lawsuit.

Sams claims police officers then “falsely charged” him and caused him to be jailed without justification.

The lawsuit says Sams was badly injured after the alleged attack. He suffered “severe and permanently disabling and disfiguring injuries together with great pain and suffering,” says the lawsuit.

After he was released from the Passaic County Jail, Sams went to the Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment. He was told he suffered “orbital fractures” as a result of the “brutal assault.”

Sams is seeking an unspecified amount in damages and legal fees.
