A city man in possession of a handgun was partying with a large group of people on Clinton Street late Saturday night when police arrived, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Zamere Taylor, 26-year-old, tried to break away from the party. Police said there were 20 people playing loud music and drinking liquor on Clinton Street and Garfield Avenue at around 11:35 p.m.

Police approached the group to issue tickets. Taylor, holding a liquor bottle, began to walk away from police. He was ordered to stop.

Taylor threw the liquor bottle to the ground and began to run towards North 1st Street. Police gave chase through Clinton Street. He discarded a Phoenix Arms .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol into the yard of a residence at 60 Clinton Street.

Police chased him down on North 1st and Arch streets. He was placed under arrest. He is being held at the Passaic County Jail pending a court hearing.
