Paterson man pleads guilty to selling heroin that caused death of New York resident

A man pleaded guilty to selling heroin that caused the death of a Warwick, New York, according to federal authorities.
Shameik Byrd, 31, of Paterson, pleaded guilty to one count of distribution and possession with intent to distribute heroin.
Authorities said on April 1, 2016, Byrd sold two people five glassine envelopes of heroin stamped “Trap Queen.” The next day he sold them 13 more glassine envelopes with the same stamp. Immediately after buying the heroin from Byrd, the other two people sold the same heroin to the 25-year-old victim.
On April 3, 2016, Warwick police responded to report of an unresponsive man at a residence. Police observed empty bags of heroin stamped “Trap Queen.” The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed he died from “acute heroin intoxication.”
Byrd faces 20 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 14.
