A mother has been arrested for stabbing two of her children, one fatally, on Saturday, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Iris Tolentino, 46-year-old, of Paterson, has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, second-degree two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon,

Tolentino stabbed her two sons on the third floor of 96 North 6th Street at around 7:04 a.m. Police arrived on report of a stabbing. They located three brothers – 7, 15, and 17 years old – inside the residence.

The 17-year-old suffered a stab wound to his upper arm and was holding the bathroom door closed when officers arrived at the scene.

The 15-year-old was uninjured.

The 7-year-old suffered “numerous stab wounds” and was not responsive, authorities said.

The 17-year-old and the 7-year-old boys were rushed to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment.

The 7-year-old boy was pronounced dead. The 17-year-old was treated and released.

Tolentino put up a struggle with police officers. Two officers suffered minor injuries trying to take her into custody.

Police learned Tolentino stabbed her two sons before she was restrained prior to police arrival. She was also taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for a mental health screening.

Tolentino faces life in prison if convicted for the murder of her son.
