Uber is offering 5,000 free rides to vaccination sites for Paterson residents to boost vaccine access for underserved communities, announced assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter on Monday afternoon.

Sumter secured the partnership between Uber and the St. Luke Community Development Center to offer the free rides.

“This partnership will help Paterson residents without access to transportation get to and from local vaccine centers to help them take this important step to protect their health and the health of our entire community,” said Sumter.

Sumter thanked both Uber and St. Luke for working cooperatively to improve vaccine access for minority communities.

Participants will get a promo code for the free rides to and from the vaccine site for both required doses.

“Our community is faced with many challenges in getting vaccinated and transportation is certainly one of the major hurdles for people who do not own cars and may not have the financial security to afford a ride,” said Kenneth Clayton, president of St. Luke CDC and pastor of St. Luke Baptist Church. “I’m incredibly thankful to Assemblywoman Sumter for bringing this partnership to us and to Uber for being there for Paterson in its time of need.”

The assemblywoman’s office and St. Luke will conduct community outreach to residents to book them for Uber rides to vaccination centers.

“We are proud to be working with Assemblywoman Sumter and an excellent organization like St. Luke CDC with a track record of helping people in need and we look forward to helping these residents get the protection they deserve,” Alix Anfang, a spokesperson for Uber, said.
