A city man has pleaded guilty for his role in a car crash that left one person dead and two others seriously injured, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Lawan A. Henry, 24, pleaded guilty on Monday to death by automobile, driving without a license causing death, and two counts of fourth degree assault by automobile as part of a plea agreement.

Henry will receive 9 years in state prison as part of the plea deal. He must serve 85 percent before becoming eligible for parole. He will also be put on three years of parole supervision upon release from prison.

On November 15, 2020, Henry admitted to recklessly driving a vehicle on Broadway and East 30th Street. He admitted to traveling 108 miles per hour in a 25-mile zone. He lost control of the fast-moving vehicle and crashed, he admitted in court.

A 17-year-old passenger in his vehicle died from injuries sustained in the crash. Two other passengers suffered serious bodily injuries.

Henry is scheduled to be sentenced by Passaic County judge Marybel Ramirez on September 22.
