A city man has been sentenced to 17 months in federal prison for his involvement in breaking into postal boxes to steal checks.

Miguel Ortiz, 22-year-old, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He was sentenced on Thursday.

Ortiz and his co-conspirators broke into U.S. Postal Service collection boxes throughout New Jersey to steal mail. They agreed to steal and deposit the checks into bank accounts that were controlled by them. They then withdrew funds from those accounts.

Ortiz was also sentenced to three years of supervised released and ordered to pay $90,864 in restitution and $23,123 in forfeiture.
