The overnight rain that led to icy roadways on Wednesday morning led to 80 vehicle accidents in Paterson.

Many roadways, both side streets and primary roads, were exceedingly icy at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

Some Passaic County roads, such as Union Avenue, were covered in a layer of ice.

Mayor Andre Sayegh in a news conference later in the morning said 15 public works trucks were salting the roadways.

“We’re managing the best that we can,” Sayegh said. He said many of the accidents involved buses. He said there were over 200 emergency calls for service.

Public works director Billy Rodriguez said he found out about the storm at 4:10 a.m. He said he put four trucks in service at that time. The total 15 trucks didn’t enter service until 7:30 a.m., explaining the icy roadways during the busy morning commute.
