A man has been arrested for allegedly intentionally driving his vehicle into a residence and striking two people.
Doretero Cruz, 53, of Paterson is charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose in connection with the June 19 incident that took place on Market and Southard streets.
Police responded to the area on a report of a motor vehicle accident involving possible struck pedestrians. Police located a motor vehicle that had crashed into a residence and two men, ages 27 and 30, who were suffering from apparent injuries. Cruz was located behind the wheel of the motor vehicle and was aided by members of the Paterson Fire Department.
An investigation revealed that Cruz had been involved in a physical altercation with the two victims prior to the incident. Cruz then intentionally used the vehicle to strike the two victims, authorities said.
Cruz was subsequently arrested by police in the area of Market Street and East 18th Street on June 21 at approximately 8:10 p.m.
He is being held at the Passaic County Jail pending a court appearance. He could face decades in prison if convicted on the charges.
