A man was arrested this week in connection with a shooting incident that occurred in late January. The shooting took place in the area of East Main Street and Hillman Avenue in Paterson.
Miguel de la Cruz, 26, of Paterson, who was arrested on Tuesday, faces multiple charges stemming from the incident. He is charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and aggravated assault, with charges spanning the second and third degrees.
The incident that led to de la Cruz’s arrest occurred shortly after midnight on January 29, 2024. Police were called to the scene following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found two male victims, one 18 and the other 30, both of Paterson, who had sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds. The victims were quickly transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment.
Following an investigation into the January 29 shooting, authorities identified de la Cruz as the alleged perpetrator. He surrendered to the police at around 8 a.m. of February 27.
Authorities said de la Cruz could face decades in prison if convicted on the charges.
Prosecutors have submitted a motion for pretrial detention, seeking to keep de la Cruz in custody until the case is resolved.
