Paterson man arrested in shooting of Passaic City man

A man has been arrested for a shooting in the area of Park Avenue and East 18th Street.

Jhon Garcia, 29, of Paterson, is charged with attempted murder in the first degree, unlawful possession of a weapon in the second degree, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the second degree, and certain persons not to possess a weapon in the second degree.

At approximately 5:22 a.m. on July 5, police were dispatched to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center to meet with a 33-year-old man from Passaic City who had suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound. Officers determined the shooting occurred in the area of Park Avenue and East 18th Street.

Following an investigation, police identified Garcia as the suspect. He was arrested without incident by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 7:00 a.m. on July 16. Garcia was also charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance in the third degree.

The crime of attempted murder in the first degree carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The state has filed a motion for pretrial detention.
