A heat advisory is in effect for Paterson today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with heat index values expected to reach up to 102 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The combination of high temperatures and humidity may lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for seniors and individuals with chronic health conditions. Residents are advised to use air conditioning to stay cool or seek out air-conditioned spaces if necessary. Homes without air conditioning can become significantly hotter than outdoor temperatures, posing additional risks.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends that those working outdoors take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. In the event of heat stroke, immediate medical attention is required, and individuals should call 911.

A heat advisory is typically issued when the heat index is expected to reach 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any duration. Residents are urged to check on vulnerable friends, family members, and neighbors during this period.
