Paterson man arrested in connection with June shooting

Rafael-Cabrera-Perea

A man was arrested Monday in connection with a June shooting in Paterson.

Rafael A. Cabrera Perea, 22, of Paterson, was arrested early Monday morning on charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The arrest stems from a shooting that occurred June 17 in the area of Prospect and Ellison streets.

Police were dispatched to the scene around 2:41 a.m. on June 17 after receiving a report of gunfire. Shortly after, authorities were informed that a 26-year-old man from Kearny had arrived at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center with non-fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators identified Cabrera Perea as a suspect in the shooting.

Perea was taken into custody at about 1:47 a.m. Monday in the area of 21st Avenue and Summer Street without incident.

Perea faces a potential sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
