A Paterson man was charged in connection with a shootout that occurred in the area of Straight Street and Park Avenue, according to authorities.

Uvaldo Mora, 28, of Paterson, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and certain persons not to possess a weapon, both second-degree offenses. The charges stem from an incident on Oct. 5 at around 11:15 p.m. when police received reports of gunfire in the area.

Police said Mora and a 33-year-old man, also from Paterson, exchanged gunfire. The 33-year-old man was struck in the head and torso and later died from his injuries on Oct. 8 at approximately 11 a.m. Mora sustained non-life-threatening wounds during the incident.

Mora is currently in custody at the Bergen County Jail awaiting his first appearance at Central Judicial Processing. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion for pre-trial detention, which will be heard by a Superior Court judge at a date to be determined.

The charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and certain persons not to possess a weapon each carry a potential sentence of 5 to 10 years in prison.
