Patrick Murray has officially taken command as Officer in Charge of the Paterson Police Department, replacing Isa Abbassi, who was appointed by Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin in May 2023, officials announced.

Murray, 61, is a 39-year veteran of the department and most recently served as Executive Officer and Deputy Officer in Charge. Born and raised in Paterson, he followed his father’s footsteps to join the force and has held roles in multiple units, including Patrol, Burglary, Major Crimes, and Special Investigations.

In 2006, he supervised the newly formed Ceasefire Unit, aimed at reducing gun violence, and later led the Specialized Investigation Division. Murray has emphasized strengthening relationships between police and the community throughout his career.

“It is an honor to be chosen by Attorney General Platkin and Executive Director Abbassi,” Murray (pictured at the center in the background) said in a statement. “Residents can expect a continuation of the progress, policies, and strategies put in place to improve public safety in Paterson with a strong focus on building community relationships while reducing crime in our city.”

Attorney General Platkin praised Murray’s leadership and experience. “OIC Murray brings decades of experience to his new role, and I have full confidence in him,” Platkin said.

Former Officer in Charge Isa Abbassi will now serve as Executive Director of the newly created Office of Policing Strategy and Innovation (OPSI) under the state Department of Law and Public Safety. OPSI aims to promote consistency and excellence in policing across New Jersey. Abbassi will remain involved in Paterson as the department’s Monitor.

The Paterson Police Department recently provided a one-year update to its Strategic Plan, unveiled in late 2023. Officials reported that nearly three-quarters of the 55 outlined goals and initiatives have been completed, with others in progress. Murray pledged to maintain the department’s momentum.

“I have always had great pride to wear a Paterson Police uniform,” Murray said. “The men and women who wear it deserve the praise, and I am humbled to serve as their next leader.”
