A jury in Passaic County convicted a Paterson man of sexual assault and child endangerment charges on Monday.
Cirilo Tello, 54, was found guilty of one count of second-degree sexual assault and two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child following a trial before Superior Court Judge Barbara J. Buono Stanton.
The charges stem from an investigation initiated on Jan. 4, 2023, when police contacted the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding the sexual assault of a 10-year-old child in Passaic City. According to prosecutors, the child reported being sexually abused by Tello on multiple occasions between October 2020 and October 2022 at a residence in Paterson.
Investigators interviewed the victim and several witnesses, uncovering allegations that Tello also committed offenses against the victim’s brother, who was present during the assaults. Tello was arrested and charged following the investigation.
Tello, who is currently held at the Bergen County Jail, is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 24, 2025, at 9 a.m. He faces 5 to 10 years in state prison for each charge. The sexual assault conviction includes a requirement to serve 85% of the sentence under the No Early Release Act before becoming eligible for parole.
Tello is also subject to Megan’s Law registration and lifetime parole supervision.
