Hawthorne man sentenced to 15 years for Paterson aggravated manslaughter

Tyheem T. Jones

A Hawthorne man was sentenced Monday to 15 years in New Jersey state prison for aggravated manslaughter. The sentence stems from the 2020 death of a man who was assaulted following a shooting in Paterson.

Tyheem Jones, 40, of Hawthorne, was convicted of aggravated manslaughter on November 3, 2023, after a jury trial. Prosecutors said Jones must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole under the No Early Release Act.

The charges related to an August 27, 2020, incident where Jones, along with a juvenile and other unidentified suspects, assaulted Nicolas Reyes near Auburn Street and Godwin Avenue. The assault followed a shooting on Godwin Avenue that had occurred minutes earlier, authorities said. Surveillance video presented at trial captured the assault, which lasted approximately 11 minutes.

Reyes was taken to a hospital after the attack but later died from his injuries, prosecutors said.
