A man has been charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Sunday on Alabama Avenue in Paterson.
Shakim D. Adams, 21, of Paterson, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a second-degree offense, authorities said.
At approximately 8:49 a.m., police received a call regarding a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle in the area of Alabama and Trenton avenues. When officers arrived, they found Abel Herrera, 59, of Paterson, with significant injuries. He was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation determined that a green Chevy Trailblazer, allegedly operated by Adams, struck Herrera before fleeing the scene, authorities said.
Adams is currently in custody awaiting his first appearance at Central Judicial Processing. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion for pre-trial detention.
A conviction for leaving the scene of an accident carries a potential sentence of five to 10 years in prison.
