The New Jersey Puerto Rico Commission on Thursday announced four new gubernatorial and Senate appointees, including two with ties to Paterson.

Melendez, a graduate of the Paterson school system, and Ramos, a teacher in the Paterson Public Schools, are among the newly appointed members.

The bipartisan commission, established under the Murphy administration, supports island stabilization efforts, explores economic development opportunities, and strengthens educational and cultural exchanges between New Jersey and Puerto Rico.

“Each of you has demonstrated exceptional leadership and deep commitment to service. I am confident they will bring these qualities to the commission,” Gov. Phil Murphy said

The commission, co-chaired by Peggy Anastos and Jose Lozano, consists of 35 members from various regions across the state.

“Having worked closely with many of the new appointees, I am excited to officially welcome them to the commission,” Anastos said. “I know their expertise and talent will enhance our efforts to improve the lives of New Jerseyans and Puerto Ricans.”

Secretary of State Tahesha Way also welcomed the appointees.

“With solid experience and steadfast dedication to New Jersey, they are well equipped to support the commission’s expanding work on the island and in the Garden State,” Way said.

Melendez, a product of the Paterson school system, has lived in both New Jersey and his native Fajardo, Puerto Rico, where he was a business owner. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Latino Veterans of New Jersey, advocating for veterans and their families.

Ramos, a social studies teacher in Paterson Public Schools, has a long history of public service. He began his political career in 1999 as the youngest councilman in Hoboken’s history and served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2008 to 2013. He currently represents Hoboken’s Fourth Ward on the City Council.

The new appointees join the commission in advancing its mission to foster connections and create opportunities that benefit both New Jersey and Puerto Rico.
