Paterson teen charged with Market Street murder

Davon-White

An 18-year-old male has been charged in connection with a March 15 homicide near Market and Pennington streets in Paterson.

Davon White, 18, of Paterson, is charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder, both first-degree offenses; and unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, both second-degree offenses.

Authorities said that around 5:20 p.m. on March 15, a Hyundai Elantra stopped near the intersection of Market and Pennington streets. Three individuals exited the vehicle and began firing handguns. The victim, Abel Angeles-Vargas, 28, of Paterson, was struck multiple times and later pronounced dead at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center.

A subsequent investigation identified White as one of the shooters, according to officials. He was charged and processed on Monday without incident. He remains in custody awaiting his first appearance at Central Judicial Processing.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office intends to file a motion for pre-trial detention. A Superior Court judge will determine the date and time of that hearing.

A first-degree murder conviction carries a sentencing range of 30 years to life in prison. Conspiracy to commit murder carries a 10- to 20-year sentence. Each second-degree weapons offense carries a sentence of five to 10 years.
