Two Paterson men charged in 2024 shooting on 20th Avenue

Clark-and-Smith

Two men were arrested and charged in connection with a 2024 shooting that injured two people on 20th Avenue in Paterson, authorities said.

Shaheem Clark, 20, and Jakahri Smith, 22, both of Paterson, were taken into custody months apart, according to police. Clark was arrested on August 8 in Elmwood Park, while Smith was arrested on March 19 in Lynn, Massachusetts. Both are charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, carjacking, and multiple weapons offenses.

The charges stem from a March 18, 2024, shooting that occurred around 2:17 a.m. near 20th Avenue and East 33rd Street. Officers responded to a report of gunfire and found two men, ages 27 and 43, suffering from non-fatal gunshot wounds. Both were transported to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center for treatment.

Police said a crime scene was located in the area and a subsequent investigation identified Clark and Smith as suspects. Clark was arrested without incident in the area of Mola Boulevard and 16th Avenue. Smith was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service near Walnut and Sterling streets in Lynn.

Clark also faces charges related to drug possession and distribution, including possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute and possession of a weapon while committing a drug offense. Smith faces an additional charge of being a certain person not to possess a weapon.

The state has filed for pretrial detention for both men. Clark has been ordered detained, while Smith’s hearing is pending before a Superior Court judge.
