Paterson man found guilty of murder in 2021 double stabbing

Jose-Martinez

A man was found guilty Tuesday of murder and several related charges following a 2021 double stabbing outside a residence in Paterson.

Jose Martinez, 36, of Paterson, was convicted by a jury on two counts of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

The verdict followed a trial before Superior Court Judge Sohail Mohammed. Jury selection began March 18, and jurors returned their verdicts on Tuesday after about a day of deliberations.

According to evidence presented by the state, Martinez and co-defendant Francisco Martinez fatally stabbed Jamie Hernandez and Johnny Jimenez and injured Jeremiah Rivera during an altercation outside the defendant’s home on July 5, 2021. Prosecutors introduced body camera footage from responding officers, along with eyewitness and law enforcement testimony. The case also included expert analysis from a medical examiner, a serologist, and a DNA analyst with the State Police Lab.

Sentencing is scheduled for June 5. Martinez faces a sentencing range of 30 years to life in state prison for each murder conviction.
