A man has been charged in connection with a March 22 homicide in the area of 12th Avenue and East 24th streets in Paterson, authorities said.
Jihad Abdullah, 21, of Paterson, is charged with murder, first degree; conspiracy to commit murder, first degree; unlawful possession of a weapon, second degree; and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second degree, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police responded around 5:05 p.m. March 22 to the area of 12th Avenue and East 24th streets on a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found Jah’Zyer Montgomery, 21, of Garfield, with multiple gunshot wounds. Montgomery was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
A subsequent investigation identified Abdullah as one of the individuals involved in the shooting, authorities said. Abdullah was taken into custody on April 23 without incident.
The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion for pre-trial detention. A Superior Court judge will determine a hearing date and time.
If convicted, murder carries a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years to life imprisonment. Conspiracy to commit murder carries a range between 10 and 20 years, and the second-degree weapons charges each carry a range of 5 to 10 years.
