The husband of assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter has received a 13 percent salary increase from the Paterson Public Schools.

School board members raised Kenneth Sumter’s salary from $102,267 to $115,288, a 13 percent increase, on August 12, according to public documents.

Sumter’s job title was changed from acting supervisor of special education, technology and compliance to supervisor of special education technology and data compliance.

“With the Board of Education’s recent decision about Mr. Sumter’s employment, Mr. Sumter has gone from working 10 months of the year to 12 months,” said Paul Brubaker, spokesman for superintendent Eileen Shafer.

Brubaker said Sumter has been given more responsibilities.

Sumter is working with Management and Information Systems Department on student attendance data, and compiling special education IEP compliance data from all of the district’s schools and reporting that data to the state. It includes district affiliated pre-k programs and out of district students, said Brubaker.

“Mr. Sumter will also be monitoring federal programs and special projects for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, policies and procedures. By designating these responsibilities to Mr. Sumter, the district will perform more efficiently in these areas,” said Brubaker.

Sumter has been working at the Paterson school district for 24 years, according to public records.

School board president Kenneth Simmons did not respond to a request for comment for this story.

Paterson Times you're ridiculous! Trying to create a story tied to Assemblywoman Sumter as if his promotions and raises are politically motivated. It's time I stop reading this crap!

Where you been living? Paterson corrupt. You can't get a job without relationships. You sure don't get THIRTEEN PERCENT pay raises without them. Paterson can't buy text books but got money to give Assemblywoman husband THIRTEEN PERCENT.

Take your head out your ass, these political hacks make all the money meanwhile the students can barely read or write.

Exactly.Education in this city is being used to line many pockets. How could such a high amount of taxes be used for "education" but neither kids nor adults read or write properly? Most parents are dumb too,so they don't question anything or demand answers as to why their kids don't speak, read or write properly.

These are the stories that the people of Paterson with an IQ ought to be told about. It seems this directly effects you. Guess what. This should be investigated and heads should roll. CORRUPTION. I will be contacting the authorities. How about that!

Add my name to that complaint. What's going on in Paterson needs federal investigations

Money for double digit pay raises for adults but no money to buy books and laptops for children. Not even a month went by after we heard Shafer got 15% pay raise.

    They don't have connected relatives…

Please let me know where I can send my resume, I know I am qualify for a job here.
I will even do it for less just because I won’t have to commute too far .
If we are giving raises like these here why are students going without, why teacher have to come out of pocket for basic supplies.
This raise is a connection raise.
That the reason the bd have no comment.

Stop electing these people they are all friends, they have zero interest in our kids.
Skip over the names when they appear on the ballot.
