A city man is in police custody over the shooting of a 34-year-old at the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Auburn Street last week, according to the Paterson Police Department.

Vinnie Morgan, 43-year-old, has been charged with attempted murder, weapon possession, and possession of weapon by an individual not to have a weapon, police said. Morgan was identified as the suspect in the September 4 shooting following an investigation by detectives Ed Taylor and Rolando Polio of the Ceasefire Unit.

Morgan allegedly wounded 34-year-old city man last Thursday at around 9:15 p.m. Police at the time said the victim and Morgan engaged a verbal argument that led to the victim being shot once in the leg. Morgan left the wounded victim on the sidewalk.

Authorities caught up with Morgan on Sunday when he was reporting the Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (SLAP) over another unrelated matter.

“Morgan was detained by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday when he reported for the S.L.A.P program as a result of an unrelated matter,” said Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit. “Sheriff’s officers then contacted Paterson Detectives and he was taken into custody without incident.”

Morgan’s bail is set at $750,000 without a 10-percent option, Murray said.
