New city law wants taxi drivers drug tested

taxi

A new law in the City Council, upon passage, will require city taxi drivers to go through a drug test once a year. The requirement not only includes new drivers but also existing license holders, who will be required to undergo drug testing before renewing.

The same ordinance will also increase taxicab license fee, a per a year fee that is paid by taxi owners; and taxi drivers’ license fee would also go up.

At present a taxicab owner pays, $250 for one of his cabs annually, once the new law is enacted that cost will go up by $100 to $350. And the taxi drivers’ license fee which is presently at $25 per a year, will go up by $50 to $75 per.

As the fees to operate and drive a taxi increases, some of the cost will certainly be passed down to customers.

Hearing on the bill is set for tonight, Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 at the City Hall around 7pm.
