Two homicides shattered the peaceful National Night Out event overnight: a shooting near Auburn Street left a teenager dead; another shooting near 6th Avenue left the victim dead, according to Paterson Police Department.
A man was outside, near East 26th Street and Plesinger Place, where he was fatally shot — police found the body sometime after the shooting, at around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
In the second shooting, a 17-year-old, who was playing basketball with a group of other teenagers, near Godwin Avenue and Auburn Street, at around 11:30 p.m., was killed, when a gunman fired into the crowd. In the corner of Godwin Avenue and Auburn Street, Jaquell Johnson, 17, and few of his friends, were playing basketball, when a gunman approached and began firing at the group, according to police. The teen, whose name was released later in the day, instantly died.
The East 26th Street incident involved another teenager whose name police have yet to release. Police have yet to release more information on the two incidents.
National Night Out, an event that attempts to create peaceful neighborhoods free of shootings and violence, was itself a victim in last night’s two shootings.
