A city man was arrested and charged with attempted murder for wounding another man on 21st Avenue in March, announced the Paterson Police Department on Tuesday afternoon.

Zikeme Brooks, 21-year-old, city resident, was identified as a suspect in a March 18th, 2014 shooting of a 24-year-old Waretown resident who was in the area of 21st Avenue and East 27th Street, according to police.

Police said Brooks approached the victim producing a weapon in a robbery attempt at around 8 a.m. that night, but victim ran at which point Brooks fired. “The victim attempted to flee on foot when the male suspect fired at the victim, striking him in the buttocks,” said Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit.

The victim was transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center where he was treated and since released, said police.

Detectives Edgar Taylor and Rolando Polio from the unit investigated the incident, and identified Brooks as the shooter.

Brooks was already in custody for an unrelated charge being housed in the Passaic County Jail, said police. “Brooks is awaiting an initial court appearance and setting of bail,” said Murray.
