Two wounded in police involved shooting on Union Avenue

A shooting incident at the corner of Kearney Street and Union Avenue early Saturday morning left two people wounded and a police officer hospitalized.

At around 1:02 a.m. on Saturday the city’s police department received calls of a gunshot victim inside 475 Union Avenue in the corner of Kearney Street. Police officers responded to the scene.

Officers located a victim inside the El Fogon Restaurant who was in critical condition. Police called ambulance to have the individual transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. At the same time a possible second victim was making an attempt to transport himself to the hospital.

Police closed pedestrian and vehicle traffic on Union Avenue while investigating the incident. Patrons inside the restaurants were detained. Police have not said whether any suspects have been apprehended.

At around 1:10 a.m. a suspect was possibly wounded by a police officer at the intersection of Jasper Street and Union Avenue. The suspect possibly fired on the officer before the officer returned fire.

It’s not clear whether there were two victims or three.

The police officer who suffered injuries from the incident was transported to the hospital for treatment. The officer did not sustain any major injuries, according to a source.

Police have not released details of the incident. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office investigating the incident involving the officer. Chief assistant prosecutor Michael DeMarco said the prosecutor’s office is actively investigating the incident but did not provide additional details about last night’s shooting.

      the picture actually is of union ave between jasper & kearney st.-I walk past there daily on my way to take care of dogs & cats.its a really rough area where several armed robberies & shootings have occured.
