City police have charged a 36-year-old man believed to have rammed a car into a home on 17th Avenue early Sunday morning, according to police director Jerry Speziale.

Angel J. Cancel has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, driving without a license, driving while suspended, and reckless driving, said the director.

Cancel allegedly rammed his car into 336 17th Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. Police found a black 2000 Lincoln LS stuck in the building having done substantial damage to the structure.

After impact, Cancel is alleged to have removed the license plate from the vehicle and fled the scene, said police. The city’s fire department and emergency personnel responded to the scene to prevent a structure collapse at the property.

City police traffic division investigated the accident that led to Cancel’s arrest at about 11 a.m. on Monday, said Speziale. The director said Cancel admitted to the accident and leaving the scene.

The director commended the work of police officer Jose Galvan who worked to piece together the incident which ultimately led to Cancel’s arrest.

“Officer Galvan is an expert in traffic investigations and should be commended for his ability to see the situation for what it was and being endowed with the skills required to identify the individual responsible,” said Speziale.

Cancel is scheduled to appear in the city’s municipal court on July 22nd, 2015 to answer the charges against him.
