Paterson store owner killed in Ellison Street shooting, police

The owner of Ellison Mini Market was killed in a shooting on Friday night, according to police.

Police said store owner Jose Tavarez, 64, was shot to death at about 9:04 p.m.

Detective captain Heriberto Rodriguez said police responded to the location and found Tavarez with a gunshot wound. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center emergency room but did not survive, said the captain.

The convenience store located at 29 Ellison Street was closed on Saturday morning.

Police director Jerry Speziale said this is the second homicide of the year in the Silk City.

“I have the utmost confidence in the Paterson detective bureau and their solvability rate that we will solve this crime quickly,” said Speziale.
