A Newark man admitted to trying to gain entry to a Paterson home while dressed in Passaic County Sheriff’s uniform, according to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.

Clemente R. Carlos, 29, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery. He admitted he worked with two other individuals to gain entry to the home believing the resident kept cash from his business at the location.

Carlos worked with Jason Thompson, 33, of Paterson, and an unidentified third person who waited outside as a getaway driver while Carlos and Thompson entered the home impersonating sheriff’s officers.

Authorities said Carlos and Thompson entered the 20th Avenue home in Paterson on August 12, 2015. They broke open a piece of furniture searching for cash and restrained a resident under the threat of death.

Carlos admitted one person was physically restrained in the robbery. Authoirties said the two men tied the resident with a zip tie on the second floor.

The Hobbs Act conspiracy charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison and $250,000 fine, authorities said.

Carlos’s sentencing is scheduled for April 4, 2017.
