A man from Clifton and another from Paterson were arrested on gun possession charges on Monday night, according to police.

John Umstead, 26, of Clifton, and Carlos Burgos, 19, of Paterson, have been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm for unlawful purpose.

Umstead was also charged with possession of stolen property. Burgos was additional charged with joyriding in a stolen vehicle, police said.

Police arrested the two men in a traffic stop. A black Acura MDX with both men inside disregarded a stop sign on Market and East 18th Street. Police conducted a record check on Madison and 20th avenues. The vehicle’s plate was not in the system.

Detective Jose Torres approached the vehicle and saw a license plate at Burgos’s foot. He ordered the passenger to move his feet. When he moved a gun was observed between the passenger seat and vehicle’s center console.

Detectives Martin Luizzi, William Hermann, and Sergeant Richard LaTrecchia were alerted to the firearm. Both men were removed from the vehicle.

Police said the vehicle was reported stolen out of Clifton.

Both men are being held at the Passaic County Jail.
