I am writing this letter in response to a recent article that was published announcing the retirement of Dr. Donnie Evans. With the return of local control on the horizon, the current school board could very well be handed the power to select the next superintendent. To that end, I believe a series of community forums are in order.
As the board conducts its selection process, the community should have input as to who is being selected and what their goals, objectives and visions are for the district. This should all take place before any appointment takes place. These are our schools and our children. A decision of such magnitude, that will impact 30,000 students, should not be left in the hands of 9 people. The community deserves to be part of the process.
