A doctor from North Haledon with an office in Paterson received a three-year prison sentence on Monday for defrauding Medicare and private insurance firms out of $3 million by billing for physical therapy sessions that were performed by unqualified staff members.
Anthony J. Enrico, 60-year-old, pleaded guilty on a single count of healthcare fraud, for billing 150,000 physical therapy sessions that were performed by unlicensed and unqualified personnel.
Enrico billed insurance providers for sessions from January 2007 through May 2016, authorities said. Medicare and private insurers require physical therapy services be performed only by individuals like Enrico with training and certifications.
Authorities said Enrico had individuals that were not trained or certified render the services so he could bill Medicare and private insurance providers.
U.S. District Judge Kevin McNulty imposed a three-year prison sentenced and three years of supervised release. He was ordered also to pay $3 million in restitution.
Enrico, a podiatrist, had offices on Broadway in Paterson, Passaic, and Elizabeth.
