Stampone says he won’t return as Paterson corporation counsel in Sayegh administration

city-hall

Domenick Stampone, who served as corporation counsel under the two past administrations, will not be returning as law director on Jul. 1.

“The corporation counsel serves at the pleasure of the mayor,” said Stampone on Tuesday night.

Mayor-elect Andre Sayegh said he had a conversation with Stampone, but did not officially tell him he won’t be re-appointed.

“We haven’t made any official announcements on any positions,” said Sayegh on Wednesday morning.

Stampone was appointed law director by former mayor Jeffery Jones in 2013. He was re-appointed by former mayor Jose “Joey” Torres in 2014.

His salary is $122,000, according to payroll records. Prior to being appointed law director, Stampone served as an attorney in the legal department. He was hired in 2006. It’s not clear whether he intends to remain as an attorney in the law department after Jul. 1.

Stampone also serves as mayor for neighboring Haledon.

Sayegh will have to appoint eight directors. He announced a transition team that is awaiting reports from each department. He plans to meet with each department head to decide who will stay and who will not.
