The city’s school board is seeking applications and resumes to appoint someone to the seat vacated by Flavio Rivera.
Rivera had to resign after being elected to the City Council.
The applicant has to meet basic requirements like be a registered voter in the city and not have any disqualifying criminal convictions.
School board members will interview the candidates on Aug. 20 before making an appointment. Whomever is appointed will serve on the board for four months.
“Whomever gets it, if they are not signed up, they can’t run,” said former school board member Corey Teague.
The nomination deadline for the November school board race, including for Rivera’s vacant seat closed earlier in the week.
Teague has criticized the past two school board appointments. Both were picked, long before the board’s interview process described as a sham to provide a veneer of legitimacy, by officials from the Passaic County Democratic Party.
“I’ve been trying to figure it out what was that all about,” said Teague after seeing the announcement on Tuesday. He wondered why the school board waited more than a month and after the November nomination process closed to appoint someone. “This is just stupid.”
Anyone interested in the seat is asked to send a letter of interest and resume to the Board of Education by 4 p.m. on Aug. 14.
Application should be addressed to:
