Paterson man arrested with semi-automatic handgun

A city man was arrested with a semi-automatic handgun on Saturday when police responded to a fight on 12th Avenue and East 23rd Street, according to police director Jerry Speziale.

Nazere Trent, 19-year-old, has been charged with weapons offenses, authorities said.

Police responded to report of a fight in the area at around 11 p.m. While in route, police learned a man involved in the altercation was in possession of a firearm.

A bystander told police the armed suspect had fled north on East 23rd Street. Detectives observed two men on 11th Avenue and East 23rd Street.

Detectives observed Trent discard the weapon from his waist to the pavement. Police placed him under arrest.

Speziale said the firearm will be submitted to the state ballistic lab for examination to determine if it was involved in any other crimes.

Detective William Hermann, Anthony Castronova, James Jenkins, and detective sergeant Rick LaTrecchia were responsible for the arrest.
