83-year-old woman becomes Paterson’s seventh coronavirus death; people tested positive climbs to 620

An elderly woman died from the new coronavirus in Paterson, officials said Thursday afternoon.

The woman, 83-year-old, became the seventh death from Covid-19 in Paterson.

Municipal officials reported 620 cases on Thursday, up from 532. Number of people tested positive for the virus appears to be doubling every 48 hours.

Mayor Andre Sayegh announced the deployment of a new police unit to enforce social distancing on Thursday to curb the spread of the virus. He has also closed local parks to slow down the rapid spread.

Paterson has the most cases in Passaic County with Clifton trailing behind. Clifton reported 315 cases on Thursday with four deaths. Passaic County had 1,750 positive cases with 22 deaths on Thursday.

Overall, New Jersey reported 25,590 positive cases with 537 deaths.
