Paterson coronavirus cases jump to nearly 2,500

The number of people infected with the new coronavirus in Paterson increased from 2,228 to 2,490 on Thursday afternoon, setting a fresh record for the biggest daily increase in new cases.

Municipal officials said 262 people tested positive for the virus over the past 24 hours. The previous record for biggest daily increase was set on April 14 with 225 cases.

The virus has claimed 61 lives in Paterson. Age of the dead run from 22 to 96. 57% of the deceased were men; 43% were women, according to data.

No new fatalities were reported on Thursday.

Paterson has the biggest virus outbreak in Passaic County. Clifton has the second biggest outbreak in the county with 1,184 infections and 35 deaths.

Passaic County had 7,317 infections with 211 deaths on Thursday. Overall, New Jersey has 75,317 infections with 3,518 fatalities.
