A man was arrested on Thursday after detectives observed him putting a handgun into a bag secured to his body, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Mark Champion, 21, of Paterson, was charged with weapons offenses and possession of large capacity magazine. He allegedly had in possession a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, police said.

Champion was walking on 17th Avenue and East 28th Street at around 8:30 p.m. As police approached Champion, he tried to conceal the weapon by placing it into the bag.

Police took him into custody without an incident.

Police said Champion is being held at the Passaic County Jail pending a court appearance.

Great! Another gun off the streets. Is this having any effect on shooting, injury and murder rates? Please dig up some stats for us, Jon.

Shooting every few hours. Paterson is worse than a war zone.
