Firefighters rescued two sleeping occupants from a burning building on Berkshire Avenue on Sunday morning, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Both occupants were rescued from the second-floor apartment of 81 Berkshire Avenue.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at around 6:49 a.m. The fire appears to have started on the exterior of 81 Berkshire Avenue between a parked van and the building. Flames were extending into the structure and the van.

Fire also extended into 83 and 85 Berkshire Avenue. Fire reached third alarm.

“PFD crews once again deliver by evacuating residents from the swift moving fire. Rapid extinguishment of this fire surely saved impending collapse of the lightweight building materials we encountered,” fire chief Brian McDermott said.

No injuries were reported. Six people were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
