Paterson firefighters extinguish two fires on Monday

fire

Firefighters extinguished two fires on Slater Street and Ellison Street on Monday, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

No firefighters or civilians were injured in the two fires.

Firefighters arrived at 188 Slater Street at around 4:30 p.m. on report of a fire. The two-story abandoned building had smoke showing. Firefighters tried to enter the building, but faced difficulty because of steel boards encasing the structure. Eventually, they gained entry and found fire in the basement involving piles of trash.

Firefighters arrived at 220 Ellison Street at around 9:47 p.m. They found smoke coming from an air and light shaft on the side of the structure at the one-story commercial warehouse. They were allowed in by workers from an adjoining structure and found fire in an abandoned elevator shaft. Firefighters encountered problems locating the fire because of renovation and confusing layout of the building.

Cause of both fires remain under investigation.
