A fire at a two-story building on Lafayette Street claimed a life late Friday night, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Firefighters doused the flames at the 2.5-story building at 103 Lafayette Street at around 11:06 p.m.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters inspected the interior of the residence and discovered a person in the debris. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:57 a.m. on Saturday.

The medical examiner responded to the scene and took custody of the remains. Authorities said an autopsy will be performed later this week.

Origin and cause of the fire remains under investigation.
