Municipal officials are paying $425,000 to the family of a man killed by police in his house in 2012.

Saulo Del Rosario was shot and killed in his home at 10 Redwood Avenue on September 1, 2012. He was 39-year-old.

Del Rosario had locked himself in a bedroom at the house after skipping his medicine. He refused to come out of the room. His worried son had a friend call 911 to seek assistance for his father.

Police were unsuccessful in getting the man to come out of the room. Police breached the door. An officer fired two shots that struck Del Rosario in the mouth. Police said Del Rosario had a hammer that he refused to drop, according to the lawsuit.

Members of the City Council approved the settlement during a special meeting on Tuesday. An official said $375,000 is being paid for by the city’s insurance provider and $50,000 by local taxpayers.
