A federal judge sentenced three Paterson police officers for their roles in violating people’s civil rights, federal authorities said.
Jonathan Bustios, 33; Eudy Ramos, 35; and Matthew Torres, 33, all of Paterson, were sentenced on Thursday at the Newark federal court.
Bustios received a two-year prison sentence. He previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate individuals’ civil rights and extortion under color of official right.
Ramos was also given a two-year prison sentenced. He previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate individuals’ civil rights, filing a false police report, and using unreasonable and excessive force in violation of individuals’ civil rights.
Torres was sentenced to three-year probation. He previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate individuals’ civil rights and filing a false police report.
Bustios and Ramos were also sentenced to three years of supervised release.
The convicted police officers worked together to stop and search vehicles without justification to steal cash and other valuable from occupants, authorities had said when they were initially charged with the crimes.
