Paterson man arrested after fleeing scene of fatal hit-and-run collision

A real estate agent struck a woman with his motor vehicle as she was crossing a street in Garfield, killing her, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

Victor Diaz-Castaneda, 26, of Paterson, allegedly fled the scene. He was arrested on Monday and charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, endangering an injured victim, and issued multiple motor vehicle summonses.

Diaz-Castaneda, a real estate agent, was driving on Outwater Lane in Garfield at around 8:51 p.m. on January 3. He struck 51-year-old Shazia Faazal. Police received a 911 call that a pedestrian trying to cross the street was struck by a vehicle.

Faazal was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, but died from her injuries sustained as a result of the collision.

Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Garfield Police department determined the victim was hit by a 2010 Honda Civic that was being operated by Diaz-Castaneda.

Diaz-Castaneda fled the area before police arrived, authorities said.

Diaz-Castaneda is being held at the Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance.
