A man has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a child two decades ago, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Edwin Chaparro, 56, of Paterson, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with aggravated sexual assault, two counts of sexual assault, and two counts of endangering the welfare of children for the crimes allegedly committed in 2001 and 2004.

Chaparro allegedly committed the abuse when the child was 5-7 years of age, authorities said. Police learned about the crimes on November 5, 2022, triggering an investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.

Investigators determined Chaparro sexually assaulted the victim on more than one occasion between June 2001 and June 2004 at a residence in Paterson, authorities said.

Chaparro could face life in prison if convicted of the charges.
