1 dead, 1 hurt in moped-vehicle collision in Paterson

The driver of a gas-powered motorized scooter died after colliding with a vehicle on McBride Avenue in Paterson on Wednesday evening.

Authorities did not release the name of the driver, who died in the incident. His passenger abroad the moped suffered non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Totowa police officers in marked patrol cars were following the moped in their town. Moped continued into Paterson. On McBride and Murray avenues, at around 7:19 p.m., the moped collided with a civilian vehicle, authorities said.

Both men, the driver and the passenger of the moped, were ejected during impact with the vehicle. Both were taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center. At around 2:06 a.m. on Thursday, the driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating the fatal incident. Law requires them to investigate the death of any person in a police encounter.
