A man who fled after hitting two people, one fatally, with his vehicle has been arrested, authorities said.
Jose Tremols-Acosta, 62, of Paterson, has been charged with second-degree death by auto, fourth-degree aggravated assault by auto, second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and two counts of endangering an injured victim.
Tremols-Acosta was speeding and swerving across double yellow lines on Broadway by Rosa Parks Boulevard on Thursday at around 12:07 p.m. when he got onto the sidewalk and struck a man and a woman. First victim, a woman, who has not been identified, died as a result. Second victim, 83-year-old Joseph Shaw, of Paterson, remains in critical condition.
Police said Tremols-Acosta fled the scene on foot. He as subsequently arrested by police officers.
Tremols-Acosta is being held at the Bergen County Jail. He could face decades in prison if convicted on the charges.
